The Premier League golden boot award recognizes the most prolific goalscorers throughout the campaign.

It was introduced in 1992 and is given to the most clinical players in the top flight at the end of the season. While many legendary players have won the golden boot award, nobody has done it as majestically as Erling Haaland in 2023.

Erling Haaland to Manchester City always looked like a match made in heaven. And it was only a matter of time before Premier League defenders could know exactly what they were coming up against. Tall. Athletic. Scary. Clinical. There's no single adjective to describe the monstrous talisman. The
Norwegian international has become something of a ‘monster’ in the league, bullying the best defenders at will while scoring goals for fun. And it’s little surprise that Haaland won the Premier League golden boot for the 2022/23 season with 36 goals, 6 ahead of Harry Kane in second. Before Haaland came into the league, the most goals scored in the last 3 campaigns was 23. But the Norwegian’s 36 goals is a new record. For context, Haaland’s 36 goals were 2 more than Everton could manage in the entire campaign.

Tottenham Hotspur might have struggled for the better part of the 2022/23 season, but Harry Kane still had a fantastic individual campaign, scoring 30 goals in the league. In other seasons, this would have been an impressive figure and even won the Englishman the 2022/23 Premier League golden boot.
But Erling Haaland’s presence in the league meant Kane could only settle for second place, 6 goals short of the Norwegian’s figures. Despite struggling with injuries for some part of the season, the English striker found his scoring boots in perfect time to compete with Erling. The three-time Premier League golden boot winner has been the subject of interest from a host of European clubs in recent weeks, with rumors that he had rejected a new contract from Tottenham. If true, that will be music to the ears of the Bayern Munich hierarchy that has already seen the opening two bids knocked back by Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy.

Ivan Toney is massively underrated. He’s been one of the best strikers in the Premier League since the Bees came back to the top tier of English football, reaching double figures in all the 2 seasons he’s been in the top flight. The Englishman maintained his impressive form throughout the 2022/23 season, netting 20 times to record an individual best record in the top flight. Toney’s numbers are impressive, considering he plays for a Brentford side that doesn’t create as many chances as the traditional ‘Big 6’ clubs. Unfortunately, the Brentford striker won’t be available until January 2024 after he was banned from all football-related activities for 8 months for breaking the FA betting rules.

Like Liverpool, Mo Salah had a slow start to the 2022/23 season but still managed to rise through the ranks to finish 4th in the Premier League golden boot race. Mo found his form at the turn of the year to complete the season with 19 goals, only one short of Ivan Toney’s numbers. With Liverpool’s inconsistent form at the start of the season, the Egyptian international will be playing in the Europa League next season. However, the future looks bright for the ex-Roma man following Liverpool’s recent transfer business that has already seen former Brighton midfielder Alexis Marc Allister and RB Leipzig star Dominik Szoboszlai coming through the door.

Callum Wilson had a big season for The Magpies in what has been a successful campaign for Eddie Howe and Newcastle. The only issue for the English striker has been to stay fit throughout the season. But even then, he’s delivered every time he’s got his chances in the Premier League, ending the season with an individual high of 18 goals in the top flight to come 5th in the race for the Premier League golden boot. With Champions League football back at St. James Park next season, Newcastle fans will be desperate to see their marksman fit and firing to give them a better chance of going far in the competition.
