Ruben Amorim has played down suggestions that Manchester United need to sign a new striker, instead backing his current squad to improve their goal-scoring record. The Portuguese manager acknowledged concerns about the team's lack of goals but insisted that the solution lies in enhancing overall team performance.
"There is a concern in that (we are not scoring a lot of goals), but I think we have to improve as a team, because we have quality players that can score so many goals." Amorim specifically mentioned the potential of players like Rasmus Hojlund, Josh, Marcus Rashford, Bruno Fernandes, and Amad Diallo to contribute more in front of goal.
Addressing Rashford's recent form, Amorim expressed his commitment to helping the England international rediscover his prolific touch from the 2022/23 season, when he netted 30 goals. The manager recognised that Rashford's current position might not be ideal, particularly in high-pressure situations, and pledged to find the right tactical solution.
Amorim's comments came in the wake of United's 1-1 draw with Ipswich Town, where he noted that the team controlled possession in the second half but lacked attacking threat. He attributed this partly to the week's focus on build-up play, suggesting that other aspects of their game suffered as a result.
The new United boss emphasised the importance of collective improvement, stating that enhancing the team's overall performance would naturally lead to more goals. Amorim's stance indicates a preference for developing existing talent rather than seeking immediate reinforcements in the transfer market.
While acknowledging the need for Rashford to take personal responsibility for his form, Amorim assured that the player would have the full support of the coaching staff, club, and fans in his efforts to regain his goal-scoring touch. This approach aligns with Amorim's broader philosophy of maximising the potential of his current squad, as he begins his tenure at Old Trafford.
