Manchester United visit fellow Premier League strugglers Spurs on Sunday at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with the two sides fighting for what United boss Amorim considers a relegation battle. The Red Devils (29) are languishing in 13th place, two points ahead of the north London side (27), which sit further down in 14th.
“With the table as it is, it is impossible to feel comfortable at this moment,” said Amorim during a pre-match press conference on Friday. “We just want to win to improve our performance, because we are Manchester United. We need to win the next game, we need to improve and we need to perform better, so there is no comfortable situation in this club. Every game until the end of the season is a big game for us, we need to win no matter what, we need to win and to improve the way we play football.
Speaking on Spurs head coach Ange Postecoglou, Amorim admitted that he admires his work and added that the two find themselves in a similar position. Like the Portuguese, Postecoglou has also been struggling with consistency, though the former insists they must nonetheless stick to their principles and approaches despite the disappointing results.
“I'm a huge fan of his,” said Amorim. “I’m from a different culture, I’m Portuguese and the Portuguese coaches can adapt. I use one system at the moment because I believe if you work on that system we adapt that at the same time, but we are not winning games. So I can understand the connection between me and Ange". That said, the United manager insisted he is under elevated pressure than his Australian colleague due to the differences in demands between the two clubs.
The Portugal international said: "We have the same problems but, with all due respect, I'm in a bigger club with bigger pressure, but I think it’s important to follow all of these principles. He’s a good guy, a very good coach, he wants to play football in the right way and that is a very good thing. We know when we choose this kind of profession it’s a good thing but then you have to feel that pressure when you don’t win."
