Former Arsenal defender Nigel Winterburn has expressed his confidence in the Gunners’ ability to challenge for the Premier League title without adding another forward to their squad.
Amid rumours linking Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres with a move to the Emirates, Winterburn has suggested that Arsenal may not need to dip into the January transfer market for attacking reinforcements.
"Hopefully I’m wrong and we do bring someone in to strengthen the squad. But my question would be where? People debate the centre-forward role. I’m a bit more reserved than some people. They were one of the top goalscorers in the Premier League last season," the former Arsenal player told Mirror Football.
"So that says to you, why do you need a striker? When we don’t score we need a striker. In the last two games, we’ve got eight goals, which suggests that everything is fine if we play as well as we can in the right situations. I think this debate is going to rage all throughout the season," he added.
Gyokeres, who has been in impressive form since joining Sporting Lisbon, has caught the attention of several clubs, including Arsenal. However, Winterburn believes Mikel Arteta already has the tools necessary to mount a serious title challenge.
