Gabriel Jesus was called up by Fernando Diniz to prepare for the World Cup qualifiers against Colombia and Argentina, the 26-year-old striker joining Brazil's training camp despite coach Mikel Arteta saying he should not have been called up. Jesus was injured in the Champions League match against Sevilla in which the Gunners beat Diego Alonso's side 2-0.
"We are going to bring Gabriel Jesus to find out the real conditions. We believe that he can be able to play, because I like him a lot. We have 24 players on the list, and if something happens to him we won't need to change the squad," Fernando Diniz said about Jesus' Brazil call-up.
The Gunners striker was assessed by Brazil national team doctors and they have confirmed that Jesus' hamstring injury is not as serious as first thought. The injury has sidelined the player for three weeks, but he has still been called up by Diniz to fight for World Cup qualification.
"We have been following the player's situation since he was injured. We have maintained contact with the player, and with Arsenal. We know that he has been recovering from a muscle injury to the back of his right thigh and has already started working on his physical adaptation on the field. But the fact that we bring the player is Diniz's philosophy, bringing the whole group, having all the players close," Rodrigo Lasmar told reporters.
