Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone said on Tuesday that Lautaro Martinez, his opponent in the last 16 of the Champions League, has shown he is an "extraordinary player" both for Argentina and Inter Milan and is "among the best strikers in Europe, without a doubt".
"He was always, as a boy, an extraordinary player. He has shown it in the Argentine national team, he shows it every day at Inter, he found his place, where the coach favours his style of play and he is among the best strikers in Europe," said the Argentine coach about his compatriot, scorer of 26 goals in 35 games this season, in the press conference prior to Wednesday's clash between the two at the Civitas Metropolitano.
"Silence and accept whatever they want to give us," Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone assumed when asked about his fans and the atmosphere at the Metropolitano after Saturday's defeat in Cadiz, while emphatically proclaiming his confidence in the players and the team, who will play "a great game" in the second leg of their Champions League last-16 tie against Inter.
"People live from day to day. It is true that on a day-to-day basis the opinions that are being reflected are the ones that are being seen. We can't hide from that. I said after the match (against Cadiz, with a 2-0 defeat) that words are not so important as deeds. We have an important match against one of possibly the best opponents in Europe at the moment... And we have to play the game," he said at Tuesday's press conference.
"I can tell you that I have absolute confidence in my players, in my team and I know that they will play a good game," the coach stated in his second reply, repeating his thoughts several times during his press conference on the eve of their quarter-final berth, facing a 1-0 deficit.
"I don't have much to talk about. I don't think I need to talk too much, I understand. I trust 100% in the players and 100% in the team. I know they're going to play a good game", added the Argentinian coach, who "had a bad time" on Saturday night after the 2-0 defeat against Cadiz.
