Despite renewing him until 2027 just last a year ago, Atletico Madrid are reportedly looking for a replacement for Diego Simeone. The Argentinian has led the 'Rojiblancos' for 13 years, but reports from the Spanish capital assure that the club are ready for a change.
According to 'Relevo', Simeone has slowly been losing power since the arrival of new Director of Football Carlos Bucero about 10 months ago. Moreove, there is a feeling that 'El Cholo' is now well past is prime and is struggling to get the best out of his players The same source claims that 'Los Colchoneros' have begun their search for a successor since June following a disappointing fourth place in La Liga in the previous campaign.
Another key sign that Simeone's time at Atletico Madrid could soon be over, is the expected departure of Sporting Director Andrea Berta at the end of the season, who has been considered Simeone’s right-hand man during his time in charge of the club. That said, Atletico will first need to find an agreement with the 54-year-old over his salary before discussing a possible exit. Between 2024 and 2027, Simeone's salary will amount to €100m, a figure that Atletico do not want to pay out.
'Relevo' report that the main thing keeping the Argentina international to the Spanish side, is their refusal to force him out. Atletico seemingly believe that Simeone has earned the right to make a decision on hs exit. But should he leave, it would mark the end of Atletico Madrid's most successful era. Although he has often been criticised for his playstyle, Simeone has brought successes to 'Los Colchoneros', including their latest La Liga glory in 2021. Simeone has also managed to qualify for the Champions League in every full season he has been at Atletico.
