Barca have confirmed that Christensen suffered an injury in training on Monday that will keep him out of action for approximately three weeks.
"First team player Andreas Christensen suffered a right soleus injury during Monday's training session. He will be out for approximately three weeks," said the club' statement.
The Danish international's absence comes at a crucial time for the Catalan giants, who face a busy schedule of La Liga and Champions League matches. Christensen is likely to miss several important games, including possible league and cup clashes.
Coach Hansi Flick will have to reorganise his defensive options and, in Christensen's absence, will have to rely more heavily on players such as Ronald Araujo and Jules Kounde who will see their rest options reduced.
The injury adds to ongoing defensive concerns for Barcelona, who have had problems in defence recently with the injury to Inigo Martinez. Christensen's recovery timetable suggests he could be back on the pitch by mid-February, barring any setbacks. The club's medical staff will closely monitor his progress to have the defender at full fitness for the final stages of the season.
