Villarreal will host Barcelona on Sunday in La Liga 22nd matchday after having failed to win in the Catalan side's last thirteen La Liga visits to La Ceramica Stadium, where they have now lost three in a row.
Last season, Unai Emery's side were beaten 1-3 on matchday 15th in a game that went to the closing stages tied and which was marked by numerous missed chances for the home side, but also by refereeing decisions.
After an even first half in which Villarreal claimed a penalty for Gerard Pique's handball, De Jong opened the scoring in a goal that was initially disallowed but validated by VAR.
Samu Chukwueze restored parity in an individual play soon after and although Villarreal had numerous chances to complete the comeback, a Memphis strike in the 88th minute adedd to Coutinho's penalty goal in stoppage time sealed the win for the 'Cules'.
In that match, the home side featured Rulli, Foyth, Albiol, Pau Torres, Pedraza (Estupinan), Trigueros (Raba), Capoue, Parejo, Moi Gomez, Danjuma and Yeremi Pino (Chukwueze). For the visitors, Ter Stegen, Eric García, Pique, Araujo, Jordi Alba (Mingueza), De Jong, Busquets, Nico (Coutinho), Gavi, Abde (Dembele) and Memphis.
That was Villarreal's third straight defeat at home to Barca in La Liga. The last time they earned a point was in the 2018-19 campaign, when the two sides played out a thrilling 4-4 draw that was too little too late for the home side, who led 4-2 at the end of the 90 minutes only to see Leo Messi and Luis Suarez deny them of two points.
Villarreal's last win came on matchday eight of the 2010-11 campaign, when they won 3-1 in a game that Santi Cazorla opened after just two minutes and which also featured a double from Marcos Senna. The overall head-to-head record is five home wins, five draws and twelve defeats.
