Barcelona are preparing to part ways with Frenkie de Jong in the upcoming summer transfer window, following a series of disappointing performances and growing financial concerns. The Dutch midfielder, who returned from a 163-day ankle injury layoff on 1st October, has failed to impress since his comeback, culminating in jeers from a section of Barca supporters during Tuesday's match against Brest.
De Jong's substantial wages, a result of his contract renewal, have become a burden for the club, especially considering the wealth of midfield talent at their disposal, including Casado, Pedri, Olmo, Gavi, Fermin, and Bernal.
The club's board views De Jong's departure as a necessary step to alleviate financial pressures and create space for emerging talents. Despite being presented with a contract extension offer months ago, De Jong has yet to respond, further fuelling speculation about his future at Camp Nou. Barcelona's decision to seek a transfer for De Jong aligns with their need to balance the books and comply with financial regulations.
As the summer approaches, Manchester United may reignite their interest in De Jong, having pursued him previously under Erik ten Hag's management . However, with Ruben Amorim now at the helm at Old Trafford, it remains to be seen whether the English club will make another attempt to secure the midfielder's services.
