'El Clasico’ between Barcelona and Real Madrid in May will not be played abroad. Or at least, that is what the Catalan club's president Joan Laporta has in mind, and he has ruled out moving the game to another country.
'Sport' indicated that the president has communicated this to the club's board of directors, who met on Tuesday. Laporta does not want to play a match that could be decisive for La Liga outside his country.
Faced with the possibility of not being able to play in Montjuic, as they have to reach an agreement with the City Council to extend the time they have rented the stadium, he has to look for a new stadium. This period ends, for the moment, on 23rd April.
The source quoted says that Laporta was "firm in his position" to play the match at the Camp Nou, but understands that if the works are not finished in time, he must look for a solution. This means playing 'El Clasico’ at the Johan Cruyff stadium.
These are the two options that Joan Laporta is considering for 'El Clasico’, either the Camp Nou or the Johan Cruyff. However, in order to hold it there, he would have to have the approval of La Liga and be aware of the economic loss that this would entail.
Similarly, the Barcelona president has several plans up his sleeve. The next option would be to play at Montilivi, but Girona play at home that week. Beyond that, other domestic options (La Cartuja) will be considered before moving on to international ones (Wembley).
