Roma have became one of the Europa League finalists. Opting for a very defensive system, and with only one shot on target in 90 minutes, the Italian side played a goalless second leg against Bayer Leverkusen and got through thanks to their 1-0 win in the first leg.
After the game, Nadiem Amiri and Kerem Demirbay, players from the German team, were the ones who spoke to the press and used the opportunity to criticise Jose Mourinho, Roma's coach, heavily for his strategy in the game.
"I'm gutted. We didn't deserve to be eliminated by a team that wasn't playing football. I wonder how it's possible, how they played... it's not football. For a team like that to be in the final is insanity", began Amiri.
Demirbay was even harsher: "It's a shame that a style of gameplay like that can be rewarded in a semi-final of such a high level. It leaves a bitter, bitter taste. For football as well. But we have to congratulate our opponents. They accomplished their goal in a disgusting way".
Simon Rolfes, Bayer Leverkusen's sporting director, didn't stay silent either and attacked Roma's approach: "After every shot on goal there was another player on the floor who had to be stretchered off because he was very injured".
"I think that everyone in the stadium wishes Seville luck in the final. It's sad that this way of playing gave them success", finished the director, along the same lines as his players.
