Bayern Munich‘s goalkeeping could face major changes for the 2025-26 season. Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, former Bayern CEO and current member of the supervisory board opened up in Kicker about the possibility of Manuel Neuer‘s contract expiring at the end of the current season.
"I don't know whether we will renew his contract or not,‘ Rummenigge told Kicker, before highlighting the goalkeeper's role at the club: "Everyone knows how important he is to Bayern Munich."
However, Manuel Neuer is no longer a youngster, he will turn 39 in March and there are doubts about the suitability of renewing such a veteran goalkeeper. The keeper retired from the German national team last summer to focus on his club career, but it is now unclear whether he will continue to defend the Bavarian goal.
After making his debut relatively late by today's standards, as a 20-year-old in 2016-17 at Schalke 04, Neuer became one of Europe's most promising goalkeepers and grew exponentially in Gelsenkirchen before joining Bayern Munich in 2011 at the age of 25.
At the Allianz, he was considered the best goalkeeper in the world for more than a decade, not only for his saves but also for his extraordinary positioning and his unrivalled footwork. He was particularly outstanding in this respect during his time with Pep Guardiola at the Bavarian club.
In recent years, Manuel Neuer has begun to suffer from a long career and has been sidelined by several injuries. Bayern are beginning to think about a future without the goalkeeper and may decide to let the Gelsenkirchen-born player leave in the summer of 2025.
