Jude Bellingham is out of the England squad, will not train with his team-mates and will return to Spain on Tuesday to recover from the shoulder injury he has been suffering for days and which has prevented him from playing in the last two games for Real Madrid.
The midfielder travelled to England on Monday and arrived at the St George's Park training centre in the evening, where he joined his team-mates. Under FIFA rules, England could require Bellingham's presence, despite his injury, to be examined by the national team's own doctors.
Once this has been done and it has been concluded that it is in Bellingham's best interest to recover, the player will be left out of the squad for the games against Malta and North Macedonia and will rest for the next 10 days with the intention of being back for Real Madrid's games after the international break.
England no longer have anything at stake in these two matches, having sealed their place at Euro 2024 with a 3-1 win over Italy at Wembley in October. Bellingham is the fifth player to be dropped from Gareth Southgate's squad, following James Maddison, Callum Wilson, Lewis Dunk and Levi Cowill, all with various fitness problems.
