Surprising statements about the 2030 World Cup have come out of Barcelona City Council. Specifically, from David Escude, who has spoken of the impossibility of the Santiago Bernabeu to host the final of the tournament.
"At the moment, Madrid is no match for Barcelona to host the World Cup final. As of today, with the objective data in hand, the Bernabeu does not meet FIFA's requirements, as does the new Spotify Camp Nou that is being built and the new stadium in Casablanca," he said on Catalunya Radio.
FIFA's initial approach is that Real Madrid's stadium will host the 2030 World Cup final, despite the wishes of Morocco and now Barcelona.
"We are talking to whoever we have to talk to and we want to make them see that we are more than ready. With the current government, there would be no problems, things are changing," he added.
For the moment, FIFA has not made a statement. The official green light for the 2030 World Cup organised by Spain, Morocco and Portugal will be given on 11 December.
