Real Madrid's director of institutional relations Emilio Butragueno said on Monday that the Copa del Rey semi-final tie against Barcelona will be "different" to the game they played in the final of the Spanish Super Cup, and that his team are "confident" to overcome their arch-rivals.
Real Madrid and Barcelona have been drawn in the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey. The first leg will be played at the Santiago Bernabeu and the second leg at the Camp Nou.
"We compete to win and, in this case, we are up against Barcelona, who we will try to beat. The aim is to give the fans something to cheer about and reach the final. Butragueno said at the Ciudad del Futbol in Las Rozas, after the draw had been made.
This season, Real Madrid, coached by Italian Carlo Ancelotti, and Barcelona, coached by Xavi Hernandez, have already met twice.
The first was on 16th October 2022, at the Santiago Bernabeu, in a La Liga match, with Real Madrid winning 3-1. The second, on 15th January 2023, in the final of the Spanish Super Cup, in a 3-1 win for Barcelona, who went on to win the title.
"Every match is different and circumstances change. Until we face each other there will be many matches on the road and we'll have to see how both teams get to that first game. They will be hard-fought and we are convinced that the team will respond to the confidence to reach the final," he confessed.
"We know that the schedule is tough and we have to adapt. We need all the players. We play every three days, the demands are very high, but the team responds very well. The schedule is very difficult because all the opponents demand a lot, but we have to be prepared to overcome the difficulties," he concluded.
