Brazilian international Neymar branded the 6-0 thrashing Santos suffered on Sunday against Vasco da Gama in the Brasileirao as "s**t and a disgrace." It marked the worst defeat of Neymar's career.
"I am profoundly disappointed with our performance. You have every right to protest, without violence, and even to swear. It's a feeling of deep shame. I've never experienced anything like this in my life," the former Barcelona and PSG player told journalists.
The humiliation was encapsulated by the embrace Vasco da Gama's coach, former Brazilian national team manager Fernando Diniz, gave to an inconsolable Neymar at the end of the match, who left the pitch in tears, his face obscured by his jersey.
The forward, aiming to regain his place in the Brazilian national team, had never previously lost a match by six goals.
Many of the 53,000 fans at the Morumbi stadium on Sunday had hoped to witness a Neymar masterclass, but instead turned their backs on the team. Minutes after the rout, Santos announced the termination of coach Cleber Xavier's contract.
The 6-0 thrashing marked Vasco's biggest win over Santos in 98 years of encounters, and was also Pele's team's heaviest home defeat in a Brasileirao match. Santos had never previously lost a home league game by more than four goals.
The defeat leaves Santos 15th in the table, with 21 points and a game in hand, threatened by clubs battling to avoid the relegation zone.
