Chelsea started the game with little determination and although there were spells of possession they failed to create many chances for a Middlesbrough side who saw two of their players injured in less than 20 minutes, Latte Lath and Barunga had to be substituted due to injury. Despite this Boro overcame the situation and in the 36th minute, Fry finds Jones with space on the left flank, the winger delivers a low cross for Hackney to fire past Petrovic. The Blues went in at half-time a goal down as the Championship side again created danger for Petrovic's goal in the early part of the second half. From the 60th minute onwards Chelsea seemed to start to wake up and create chances and Pochettino introduced Mudryk and Broja for Madueke and Enzo, But the Blues were unable to find their best football and failed to threaten Glover's goal. Defeat for the Blues means they will have to go all out and come from behind against Boro in the second leg at Stamford Bridge on 23 January.
