Liverpool's decision to sign Federico Chiesa is welcomed within the Chiesa household, as father Enrico describes it as "the best decision of (Chiesa's) career". Enrico - who scored at Anfield during the EURO's in 1996 - is considered by many as one of Serie A's greats, counting 138 goals in the league. His son however, has been struggling to find form following a series of injuries that have seen him sidelined in recent seasons.
A cruciate ligament tear at the beggining of 2022 forced him out of the pitch for 8 months. The injury was a real blow for the player, who had just built a name for himself on the international stage at the back of an outstanding EURO 2020 campaign the summer before. Although that injury is long behind him now, Chiesa has never been able to rediscover the form that made him a star in Italy.
With that in mind, his transfer may represents somewhat of a gamble for Liverpool, who will have to rely on Chiesa to stay fit and get back to full potential. However, the player has voiced full commitment and focus to the club, which sends positive signs already. Italy national team manager, Luciano Spalletti, himself confirmed Chiesa's decision to stay in England. “Chiesa and I spoke and made a fair assessment,” Spalletti said. “I would have brought him as an extra player, not participating in the games.”
Liverpool's delicate management of Chiesa may exactly be what the former Juventus player needs to retun to his full potential after recent frustrating years. At 26, Chiesa has an amp margin of time to get back to shape and revive his career. There is no doubt that for a $16 million fee - especially in today's football - Chiesa is a risk worth taking given his undeniable talent.
