The 2024-25 season will be the turning point in the history of European competitions. Following the known changes in both the Champions League and the Europa League, it was confirmed on Monday that the same will happen with the Conference League.
The group stage, as it was known, will cease to exist. From next season onwards, 36 teams will compete in a group where the top eight will automatically advance to the next round, while the bottom 12 will be eliminated.
The main difference is that, in the Conference League, there will continue to be 6 matchdays as in the current group stage. The Champions League and Europa League will play 8 matchdays with 4 home and 4 away matches.
A format that will make it easier for more evenly matched clubs to play each other. In addition, UEFA made it clear that the priority will continue to be sporting meritocracy. Whoever earns the right to be in Europe will be part of the new era.
