The Copa America 2024, which will be played in the United States, will bring with it a change in the number of substitutions that can be made during matches. CONMEBOL has made a change to the regulations to introduce a possible extra change.
During international competition matches, teams will be able to have one more substitution in the event of a player suffering a head injury or concussion. In the event of a situation involving any of the above-mentioned health problems, the referee must be notified. The referee will use the innovative pink card in order to authorise the replacement.
Furthermore, once the match is over, the doctor who has confirmed the need for the change will have to submit the completed and signed SCAT5 form (standardised concussion assessment tool) to the CONMEBOL medical committee.
On another front, the IFAB approved the arrival in football of another card other than the conventional yellow and red cards. On that occasion it was the blue card, whose function was to punish tactical fouls and complaints.
In the end, FIFA itself denied that this new card would be implemented in the short term. In fact, Infantino, president of world football's top organisation, assured that this measure was not being considered.
