Frenkie de Jong has responded to the rumours that claimed he would be making a move to Old Trafford this summer. Currently the Barcelona midfielder is on international duty, and will face Croatia in the Nations League Final Four on Wednesday with the Netherlands.
Regarding his club future, there had been speculation that he had attracted the attention of the Red Devils, and it wouldn't have been the first time. Rumours last year suggested that Erik ten Hag's side had made a £70 million bid over the summer, but the deal was never completed, as 'Daily Mail' claims De Jong wanted to stay with the Catalans.
Now the same outlet reports that his plans haven't changed and he confirmed his intentions to stay with the La Liga champions when asked by 'Voetbal International', saying "That (staying) has been clear to me, also last summer when things were restless for a while. I always knew that I wanted to stay at Barcelona" he added. "That's why it wasn't so stressful for me last summer".
De Jong signed a contract extension in 2020 that sees him at Barca until 2026, and he will now have to step up his game after the departure of legendary midfielder Sergio Busquets. He was full of praise for his departing teammate: "I really enjoyed playing with him, especially when we were next to each other. We complemented each other really well and I learned a lot from him even though we are different types of players".
