France boss Didier Deschamps was not happy during his press conference on Wednesday. The head coach did not appreciate how out of the 23 players he has selected for the upcoming Nations League games during the November international break, the focus is all on the one player that isn’t there – Kylian Mbappe.
Mbappe has been left out of the squad for consecutive international breaks. In October he was unavailable on the premise that he had to recover from a minor injury. However, that argument was later contested as he started in Real Madrid's final game before the break.
The forward has since been questioned for his lack of commitment to the national team, especially given his status as captain of 'Les Bleus'. Reports have also claimed that Mbappe has chosen to sit out on France's Nations League fixtures as he plans to focus on 'important games' only as a means to maximise his chances of winning the Ballon d'Or next year.
With nothing but speculation on Mbappe's situation, Didier Deschamps was asked to comment on the player. However, his vague and frustrated response has provided the opposite of clarity on a topic that continues to be a mystery. “I told you what I told you. You are free to interpret that," the head coach said. "There are 23 players here. Kylian isn’t here – leave him alone,” he added, clearly tired of the repetitive question.
Mbappe has stayed in Spain, as he trained with the Real Madrid academy players on Wednesday. The 25-year-old was also spotted with former PSG teammate Achraf Hakimi earlier this week, as France prepare to face Israel on Thursday.
