Argentina boss Lionel Scaloni, referred on Wednesday to striker Angel di Maria, who will be honoured as part of the World Cup qualifiers match against Chile, and said he is “one of the best in history and has left an indelible legacy”.
At a press conference at the premises of the Argentine Football Association (AFA) in Ezeiza (Buenos Aires province), the coach spoke about the tribute that 'El Fideo' will receive on Thursday, before the Argentina-Chile match, corresponding to the seventh day of the South American qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup, after his retirement from the 'Albiceleste', which took place after the Copa America in the United States.
Scaloni considered that the former Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain player “has been one of the best players in history for the national team and has left an indelible legacy”, so “he deserves a tribute from his people, with his people, in Argentina and he will have it”.
“Everyone has, in some way, to hold on to what he has done: never give up, never give up, go through complicated moments, that's what life and football are all about. He has left, beyond the titles, an indelible legacy and, in addition to that, he is a spectacular guy, with ascendancy in a group,” he said.
In the coach's opinion, “it is to his credit” that he has earned a place in the national team, for “not giving up, not looking bad, knowing what it means to play with that shirt and transmitting that to his teammates”, regardless of whether he is called up or not and whether he plays more or less minutes.
Asked about his place in the ranking of Argentine football, Scaloni said that “I would not know how to say”, but, undoubtedly, “he is one of the best in history”. “The great thing is that he is in history and has given us great joy in recent times,” he said.
