Diego Martinez announced on Saturday that he has stepped down as coach of Boca Juniors minutes after the team lost 2-0 to Belgrano in Cordoba, the third defeat in as many outings.
Eight days earlier, Boca Juniors lost the 'Superclasico' 0-1 at La Bombonera to River Plate and earlier succumbed to Racing Club.
“There is not going to be the back and forth that we have to talk about football, simply to inform you that I tendered my resignation. I spoke first with the people on the board, then with the president and then with the players. We are not going to continue our role as coaching staff,” he announced. Martinez coached Boca in 45 matches, winning 20, drawing 15 and losing 10.
With Martinez on the bench, the Argentine club lost in the semifinals of the Professional League Cup against Estudiantes de La Plata, was eliminated by Cruzeiro in the round of 16 of the Copa Sudamericana, was relegated in the current Professional League Tournament and only has expectations in the Argentine Cup, where it must play Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata in the quarterfinals.
“I think that at this moment, although we are all responsible, the best thing is for us to leave the position so that the boys can move on. I am grateful to the institution and the president for trusting me,” he added.
While the club chooses the new coach, they have entrusted the management to Mariano Herron, coach of the reserves team, who will once again take over the position on an interim basis as he did after the departures in 2023 of Sebastian Battaglia and Jorge Almiron.
