The nominees for the 2024 FIFA The Best awards were unveiled earlier on Friday, but Inter Milan captain Lautaro Martinez was not included among the 11 candidates eligible to win the prestigious prize. Inter Milan CEO Beppe Marotta expressed his disappointment for the striker's exclusion as he spoke to the microphones of 'ANSA'.
"It's surprising and also disappointing to see that Lautaro Martinez was not nominated for the The Best Men's Player by FIFA after the incredible season he had," said the former Juventus CEO. The 27-year-old was crucial in Inter's Scudetto and Italian Super Cup triumphs last year, as well as Argentina's 2024 Copa America glory.
"His outstanding performances have led Inter to a remarkable milestone (referring to the 20th Serie A title) and Argentina to victory in the Copa America. It looks as though not only his number and trophies are being ignored but also the impact he had during big matches," he added.
Marotta concluded his criticism as he said: "Players who can rise in big occasions should be rewarded. Let's hope that in future players who shine on the football pitch, like Lautaro, will be recognised and ackowledged".
