The Ecuadorian Football Federation (FEF) announced in a statement issued after midnight that Felix Sanchez is stepping down as coach of the 'Tricolor'. Sanchez did not want to confirm this at the press conference because, he said, it was "not the right time when you are digesting the defeat (against Argentina), and also in a penalty shootout, which is more painful".
An hour later, the FEF issued a statement announcing that "the termination of the contractual relationship with head coach Felix Sanchez has been agreed". "We thank Felix and his coaching staff for their work, professionalism and wish him success in his future endeavours," the statement ended.
Felix Sanchez Bas was hired by the Ecuadorian Federation in March last year with a contract until 2026, but has encountered strong opposition to his management from a section of the Ecuadorian fans and media.
The Ecuadorian coach leaves the 'Tri' in the World Cup qualification places, 5th, and after having reached the quarter-finals of the Copa America giving the best possible impression in the last match, in which he pushed to the limit Argentina, the world champions, who could only win in a penalty shootout.
