The English Football Association (FA) is working on the future of the ‘Three Lions’. After losing the European Championship to Spain, the team is looking for a coach after the departure of Gareth Southgate.
"It's time for a change...", explained the former England coach. And he has been taken at his word by the Federation, which is clear that it wants Pep Guardiola to lead the change, according to 'The Independent'.
Although the Manchester City boss has a contract with the English club until 2025, the FA are willing to wait. They believe they could persuade the former Barca boss to take the reins of the Three Lions.
Guardiola has always been the front-runner as the ideal manager, the paper notes. However, the FA previously felt it would be impossible for them to try to prise him away from the Etihad Stadium. However, now that his contract is about to expire, the situation has changed.
Pep's contract with City expires in June 2025. The FA's plan would be to hire an interim manager to lead the team until next year. This would not be too much of a problem for him, as World Cup qualification does not kick off until the end of March. 'The Independent' claims that U21 coach Lee Carsley could be an option. But the federation needs Guardiola's ‘yes’ for that to happen.
Eddie Howe is another name on the shortlist of possible candidates to succeed Southgate. However, Newcastle have made it clear they intend to fight to retain the manager.
