39 of the 207 players in the quarter-finals of UEFA EURO 2024 are one yellow card away from missing the semi-finals, including France's Kylian Mbappe and Antoine Griezmann, England's Phil Foden and Jude Bellingham, Germany's Antonio Rudiger, Spain's Alvaro Morata, Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo and Turkey's Arda Guler.
The cards accumulated during the group stage, round of 16 and quarter-finals are not invalidated until the next round, the last step before the final in Berlin.
Spain have four players who have to avoid seeing yellow in the quarters: defenders Dani Carvajal, Robin Le Normand and Dani Vivian, as well as Morata. All but the Athletic Club centre-back are in Luis de la Fuente's starting XI for the tournament. Germany have three: Robert Andrich, Maximilian Mittelstadt and Antonio Rudiger. The coach, like his three players, also has been cautioned.
The list has grown to six in Portugal (Cristiano Ronaldo, Joao Cancelo, Francisco Conceicao, Joao Palhinha, Pedro Neto and Ruben Neves, as well as coach Roberto Martinez) and includes four in France. They are Kylian Mbappe, Antoine Griezmann, Ousmane Dembele and Aurelien Tchouameni. Four extremely important players for Didier Deschamps, who is already missing Adrien Rabiot on Friday due to a two-match yellow card suspension.
England are without centre-back Marc Guehi, who has started all four games against Switzerland, and feel the threat of suspension for Jude Bellingham, Phil Foden, Conor Gallagher, Kobbie Mainoo and Kieran Trippier against Switzerland who have Granit Xhaka, Remo Freuler, Dan Ndoye, Ricardo Rodriguez and Vincent Sierro in the same situation, as is their coach, Murat Yakin.
Turkey retain that problem. Although they have their captain Hakan Calhanoglu and their first-choice centre-back Samet Akaydin back, they are missing Orkun Kokcu and Ismael Yuksek, while eight players are on the verge of suspension: Arda Guler, Kaan Ayhan, Ugurcan Cakir, Zeki Celik, Mert Gunok, Mert Muldur, Salih Ozcan and Kenan Yildiz.
In their opponents, the Netherlands, who they face in Berlin on Saturday, Denzel Dumfries, Donyell Malen, Jerdy Schouten and Jonas Veerman are all one yellow card away from missing the next round.
