Martin Keown and Paul Scholes have both expressed concerns about Matthijs De Ligt's performances for Manchester United, with Keown calling his £42.9 million transfer an "obscene" amount for a centre-back.

The criticism comes after United’s disappointing 1-0 loss to Tottenham, which left them 15th in the Premier League, just two points clear of the relegation zone.
The defeat, which came courtesy of a 13th-minute goal by James Maddison, further highlighted United’s struggles this season. Keown pointed out that De Ligt’s decision-making has been questionable, saying he has often "created issues for the team."
"Look at De Ligt, the amount of money they spent on him by the way is almost obscene for a centre half. He's playing like a robot. There are times he can clear the ball and he puts it out for a corner. He just creates issues for the team. Ruben Amorim needs to empower him with confidence, I'm not seeing any of that with him," he told talkSPORT.
The former Arsenal defender believes that De Ligt is playing without confidence, adding that Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim needs to address the situation.
Keown’s comments echo the sentiments of Scholes, who has also been critical of the player's performances. Scholes questioned the defender's development, noting that while he was exceptional at Ajax, he has struggled since his moves to Bayern Munich and Juventus.
