The FA Cup will become the first competition in England to introduce semi-automated offside technology, the Football Association confirmed on Wednesday. If the system proves successful, the Premier League could adopt it in the near future.

Already in use in UEFA competitions such as the Champions League, the technology is designed to be more accurate and faster than the current VAR offside lines. Initially planned for introduction in the Premier League at the end of 2024, its implementation was postponed, and the FA Cup trial will now serve as a key test before a potential league-wide rollout.
The technology will make its English football debut in the fifth round of the FA Cup, the world’s oldest cup competition. "If this trial is successful, the Premier League will consider implementing the system later this season," read an official statement from the English top league.
Additionally, VAR, which was not used in the earlier rounds of the FA Cup, will be available from the fifth round onwards. Referees will also make in-stadium announcements to clarify their decisions, enhancing transparency for both spectators and television audiences.
"Semi-automated offside technology will provide more efficient placement of offside lines through optical tracking, generating virtual graphics to improve the experience for fans in stadiums and watching at home. While it does not alter decision accuracy, it significantly enhances the speed and efficiency of the process," the statement added.
The FA Cup fifth round will take place on the weekend of 1st March, featuring notable ties such as Manchester United vs. Fulham, Manchester City vs. Plymouth, and Aston Villa vs. Cardiff City.
