Fenerbahce confirmed talks to sign Jose Mourinho on Saturday in a brief official statement: "Negotiations for the coaching position have begun with Mourinho."
The Turkish press had reported the day before that Fenerbahce had reached an agreement with Mourinho for two years and claimed that club president Ali Koç had travelled to London to sign the corresponding document with the Portuguese.
The club confirmed on Friday that it is parting ways with Ismail Kartal, who has coached the team this season and whose contract expired on 31 May. Fenerbahce finished second in the table, three points behind Galatasaray and 32 points ahead of Trabzonspor.
For weeks now, former Fenerbahce president Aziz Yildirim, who is a candidate to regain the post in elections to be held on 9 June, has promised to bring Mourinho in if he is elected, and even claimed that he had already agreed everything with the Portuguese coach.
