Athletic Club goalkeeper Unai Simon will undergo surgery on Thursday on his right wrist after winning Euro 2024 with Spain, the Basque club confirmed on Monday.
Simon "suffers from scaphoid-semilunar instability in his wrist," Athletic announced on social media. The surgery will be performed at the Hospital de La Luz in Madrid "with the coverage of the private medical insurance IMQ".
The goalkeeper revealed in mid-June that he was going to undergo surgery to fix the injury, which he did not give details of its origin at a press conference during the Spanish team's training camp in Germany.
"I will have surgery after the European Championship, the length of time I will have to discuss it with the specialist who will operate on me," he explained on 17 June in Donaueschingen.
This intervention will prevent Simon from being available for Athletic's first La Liga matches, which kick off on 15 August with the visit of Getafe, so Julen Agirrezabala will start the championship in the role of first-choice goalkeeper.
