The match began with the hosts controlling possession, but Fulham's defence was solid, making it difficult for Manchester United to settle into their game. Christian Eriksen and Bruno Fernandes created some good chances, but neither could find the back of the net. Fulham, though not posing much of an attacking threat, stunned United in stoppage time at the end of the first half when Calvin Bassey scored a brilliant header from a Muniz corner.
In the second half, United pushed to get back into the game, with Eriksen and Fernandes being the standout players. However, Fulham remained organised and defensively strong. Adama Traore had to be replaced by Smith Rowe after picking up an injury. As the game wore on, it remained closely contested, with both sides trying to create chances but struggling to find a breakthrough.
Alejandro Garnacho, in particular, came alive in the latter stages, creating several opportunities for United, but the Cottagers held firm. The match seemed destined for extra time, with both teams still searching for a goal to secure qualification.
In extra time, United showed more urgency, but Fulham's defence stood strong. Despite some scrappy moments and rising tension, both teams were visibly fatigued, and the quality of their final efforts dropped. With no goals in extra time, the match was ultimately decided by a penalty shootout.
Lindelof and Zirkzee missed their respective penalty kicks, which ultimately handed Fulham the victory in the shootout. Leno stood strong for Fulham, while Onana's efforts weren't enough to prevent the defeat. It was a dramatic conclusion to a hard-fought match, with Fulham advancing to the next round.
