The funeral to bid farewell to Portuguese footballers Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva will be held on Saturday at 10.00 local time (one hour less GMT) in Gondomar, in whose club, on the outskirts of Porto, the Portuguese striker began his football career, according to various media reports.
The ceremony will take place at the Matriz Church in Gondomar, a source from the Municipal Chamber confirmed to ‘Lusa’, and the remains will then be transferred to the local cemetery.
A day before, on Friday, the wake will be held in the mortuary chapel of the Church, starting at 16.00 local time.
Diogo Jota, 28, and his brother Andre, 25, died early on Thursday in a traffic accident on the A52 in Cernadilla (Zamora, Spain), news that shocked Portugal and the football world. Their bodies reportedly arrived in Portugal on Thursday night.
The striker, formed in the Portuguese clubs of Gondomar and Paços de Ferreira, was a player of Atletico Madrid in 2016 and then played on loan at FC Porto until 2018, before he moved to the Premier League. Since 2020 he has been a Liverpool player.
His brother Andre Felipe Silva was also a footballer. He played for Futebol Clube Penafiel, a team in Portugal's Second Division.
