French striker Antoine Griezmann, who has been on fire since the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, gave Atletico Madrid a 16th consecutive La Liga home win against Mallorca (1-0), becoming the Madrid club's second-highest scorer in history with 170 goals.
Grizou, who had been rather quiet for the first hour of the game, playing as a playmaker as he had done for the French national team, popped up in the 64th minute to give the 'Colchoneros' the lead with a header.
The goal allowed Atletico (3rd, 31 points) to climb to the top of the podium, overtaking Barcelona on goal difference and moving provisionally to within one point of Real and three points of leaders Girona, who have a game in hand.
Griezmann's 9th league goal of the season, his 170th for Atletico, takes him to within four goals of becoming Atletico's all-time top scorer ahead of legend Luis Aragones (173). The 2018 world champion will try to get a little closer to this mark that has become "his obsession" on Tuesday at Feyenoord in the Champions League.
