Ilkay Gundogan played his 300th match for City when they visited Everton on Saturday on matchday 36 of the Premier League. He became the 10th foreign player to reach the achievement with the English side.
The German international will be out of contract next month and Barca have been trying to sign him for next season. Interestingly, according to 'Mundo Deportivo', the former Dortmund midfielder was close to becoming a 'Cule' in 2015.
The outlet claimed that Gundogan even managed to pass the medical exam with the Catalan side, trying to become part of Luis Enrique's squad. There was an official agreement between all the parties, but the transfer window that summer coincided with the presidential elections and the deal fell apart.
Ultimately, the board's decision, with Ramon Adell as the Chairman of the Management Committee, opted for Arda Turan, in a deal worth 34 million euros. The Turkish international did not end up meeting the expectations that surrounded him at the Spanish side.
Gundogan left the Bundesliga a year later to sign with City. Now, it seems everything has changed and there is the new possibility that the German star ends up in the Barcelona squad.
