Denmark head coach Kasper Hjulmand will not continue in his position after reaching an agreement to terminate his contract with the Danish Football Union (DBU) and his deputy, Morten Wieghorst, will take over on an interim basis.
According to the DBU, following a meeting between Hjulmand and the federation's director of football, Peter Møller, in which the Nordic team's participation in the recent European Championship in Germany, in which Denmark lost in the last 16 to the hosts, was evaluated, it was "concluded that the team needs new energy".
Therefore, according to the statement, "Kasper Hjulmand and Peter Møller have jointly assessed that it is time for a change and that a new national coach is needed". He still had two years left on his contract.
"It has been an honour and an incredible privilege to be able to coach our national team for 4 years. I have given everything I had to achieve success and get people to join the team. Representing a country is absolutely the best thing I can imagine and I will remember a fantastic time with great support for our dream," he said.
Hjulmand landed in the Denmark dugout in August 2020 and in his first tournament with the Scandinavians, the 2021 UEFA Euro 2021, he reached the semi-finals with the Nordic side, their second-best finish at the European Championship.
He then coached the Danes at the World Cup in Qatar and the European Championship in Germany, with less success in terms of results: eliminations in the group stage and round of 16 respectively.
