How can Liverpool make the top four this season?

After nearly winning four trophies last season, Liverpool has declined remarkably in this campaign. Jurgen Klopp’s men were arguably the best club in Europe last season after winning the FA Cup and Carabao Cup while reaching the final of the Champions League and taking the Premier League title race to the season’s final day.

Liverpool has been the only club to come close to stopping Manchester City from dominating the Premier League under Pep Guardiola, and the Reds will be keen to get back to their best form.
This season started poorly for the Merseysiders, with several injuries plaguing their key men until the second half of the term. From Diogo Jota to Roberto Firmino and Luis Diaz, Klopp has struggled to name a very strong team in any match in the league this season.
After 19 matches, the Reds are 9th on the league table, which is a remarkable decline from the last term, and now there are fears they will not even make the top four. Many traditional top-six EPL sides are struggling this term, and now 10 points separate Liverpool from the last Champions League spot after 19 matches.
There are about 19 more games for Jurgen Klopp’s men to play and they will feel there are still enough points to be won before the term ends. However, the likes of Newcastle United, Brighton and Fulham are threatening to break into the European places, which means the Reds must be careful.
Their fans have been buying Liverpool tickets to watch their team play at home and away from home, and they need to get value for their money and effort through their players’ performances. How can Klopp get his team going and break into the top four?
Get Salah scoring again.
Mohamed Salah has scored over 100 league goals in less than 200 matches and won the Golden Boot award with 23 goals from 35 matches last season. However, the Egyptian’s goals seem to have dried off recently, and he has just seven from 19 matches this season, which is a remarkable decline, considering the high standards he has set for himself before now.
Liverpool has to get Salah going again if they want to climb up the league table because his goals have helped the Reds win many trophies and remain around the top of European football in the last few terms.
He has goals in him and seems isolated up front in most of the Reds’ recent matches, so the coaches must work on how to free the ex-AS Roma man to be at his brilliant best again in every game.
Find a system that suits Darwin Nunez.
Nunez joined Liverpool after impressing at Benfica last season, including in two Champions League matches against the Reds. Klopp immediately declared his love for the Uruguayan, and Liverpool’s board moved to add the striker to their squad.
Nunez has shown flashes of brilliance and has clocked the most speed by any player in the Premier League this season, but the striker misses too many chances. The actual positive about the World Cup star is that he gets into great positions, and his pace is a big problem for defenders of other clubs. But these are useless if he will not score the goals and take more of his chances because that is the reason Liverpool spent almost 100m euros to buy him.
If the Reds want to get back inside the top four before this season ends, Klopp must find a system that makes life easy for Nunez so that he can start scoring as many goals as possible.
This is the only way Liverpool can begin to climb up on the league table. Otherwise, their fans can forget about Champions League football next season.
Buy a new centre-back
One man whose arrival changed the history and story of Liverpool is Virgil van Dijk, and his transfer will always be talked about as the signing that made Liverpool better. The Dutchman is one of the finest players in the world, but he has struggled this season and now faces more than a month out of action from January.
Liverpool has missed the Dutchman’s commanding influence in their backline, and they do not seem to have another defender that can step up and lead like VVD. This January transfer window offers them a good chance of making amends and they probably need to splash the cash on a new defender.
The arrival of Van Dijk in January 2018 helped them to nearly win the Champions League, which they eventually did in 2019. A new centre-back will cover the leaks in their defence and help their attackers to focus on hurting opponents.
Get the midfield working
Liverpool has had better midfielders in the past, but their current group could have been better, which affects their overall performance. The likes of Fabinho and Thiago Alcantara are expected to help Curtis Jones, Harvey Elliott and Fabio Cavalho settle, but they have been in terrible form.
Fabinho is experiencing a shocking decline, considering he was one of the best in the business not so long ago. If Liverpool will get going and start winning matches to earn a place inside the top four by the end of this season, their midfield must start working.
If Klopp cannot get what he wants from his current bunch, the German must forget loyalty and act on the transfer market by making new signings.
Pray for other clubs to drop points
At the moment, it will take more than a fine Liverpool form for the Reds to make the top four, and they will know it at Anfield. One reason Arsenal is having a great year and could even win the Premier League is that other clubs are not doing as good as they are.
Liverpool must begin to win more Premier League points and climb up on the league table before it becomes too late. But as important to their quest is the form of other sides competing for the European spots in the league.
The Reds will pray their rivals also drop points because, without that, their wins may not count as much as they should.
Focus on the Premier League
Liverpool remains in the FA Cup, Champions League and Premier League, and these competitions mean they have to play many matches. Their most realistic chance of winning a trophy this season comes in the FA Cup, but the Reds will want to try and get their hands on the UCL as well.
If they want to get the top four with the thin squad they have now, Klopp’s men probably must focus on just the EPL and sacrifice the other competitions. If the Reds do this, they will have more time during the week to rest and recover well before their next league game. That way, we can expect better performance from their players, whenever they step on the pitch.
Liverpool remains one of Europe’s top clubs and their poor season could be because they played too many matches last term. If their injured stars return and others hit their best form, Klopp’s men will be unstoppable, and they have shown in the past that they could go on one of those long winning runs that can secure a league crown.
