Barcelona were dealt a blow when Ter Stegen suffered a serious knee injury against Villarreal, which means the German goalkeeper will miss the rest of the season. The ‘Cules’ were without their first choice goalkeeper and Inaki Pena did not seem to be enough for the club's board.
Therefore, the current La Liga leaders decided to go for Wojciech Szczesny, who announced his retirement at the end of last season. The Pole did not think twice and came out of retirement to sign a contract with the Catalan side until June 2025.
Much of the press has reported that Szczesny will be Hansi Flick's first choice goalkeeper, although according to the new Barcelona signing, no one has assured him of an important role and he is willing to compete with Inaki Pena to be a regular starter.
"I didn't have any guarantee about the #1 spot at Barca. In football, there are no guarantees. I'm here to compete. If I lose the competition, and Inaki Pena plays well this season, I won't be sad. The club asked me to help, and I will do it," he said.
