Wojciech Szczesny is a new Barcelona player. The Polish goalkeeper came out of retirement when he received a call from his compatriot Robert Lewandowski, encouraging him to try his luck at Camp Nou.
In an interview on Luca Toselli's channel, the goalkeeper admitted that he had previously left Juventus and not exactly by his own decision: "I wanted to continue helping the team this season as well, but what happened was not up to me. I didn't expect to be left out of the project, I would never have imagined it.
"At the beginning of last season, I spoke frankly with sporting director Giuntoli, when we were discussing my renewal. I told him that at the end of the 2024/25 season, I would have retired, but then I read in the newspapers the news about Di Gregorio," he continued.
Despite the arrival of a new goalkeeper, Szczesny felt strong enough to continue for another year. "I thought he was going to come in as a second, because Perin wanted to go to another club, and I was convinced until the end of the season that he would have stayed there.
"When he was signed, however, we discussed the termination of my contract," he explained. "I didn't share the club's decision, but I accepted it. I wanted another year, I felt I could still give a lot, but after Juve, I wasn't ready for other challenges. I have no resentment towards Giuntoli, I still respect the club," he continued.
As soon as he heard of Barcelona's interest, his inner circle encouraged him because he could not let this opportunity pass him by.
