Rafa Benitez's last experience in Spanish football was not as good as expected given the prestige with which the coach arrived. The Spaniard spent a disappointing spell at Celta Vigo and was sacked when the Galician side's La Liga status was still in doubt.
Now, on SkyBet's ‘Stick to Football’ podcast, he has defended his work at the club and defended himself by claiming that he could compete against any club if they provide him with a squad to suit his tastes: "If a team gives me the tools, I can compete against anyone.
According to Benitez, Celta are currently following all the recommendations he made a few months ago: "In all honesty, they are doing exactly what I told them they had to do. If you look at the players who are leaving the club, they are the same ones I asked to leave, but they are doing it with a different coach.
"At Inter Milan the same thing happened," he said of his time as “Nerazzurri” coach. "They do it afterwards because they don't want to recognise that I was right when I said some players should leave."
"The teams trust what the players say more than the coach. They are not happy, but they are not happy because if they don't play they can't be happy. I am choosing someone who is better for that position and that's why they are not playing. So they are going to talk to the president or the board of the club," he lamented.
