Spanish footballer Andres Iniesta, former Barcelona player and 2010 World Cup winner, sent an affectionate letter to Juan Roman Riquelme on the occasion of the farewell match to the Argentine star that will be played on Sunday at La Bombonera.
"In the end, you will get the match you deserve, Roman. I regret not being able to accompany you in this special moment enjoying the magic of La Bombonera," said Iniesta in a letter published by the sports daily 'Ole'.
Iniesta, who had his own farewell match a fortnight ago at Japanese club Vissel Kobe and is still in the Asian country, used the letter to express his "gratitude" to Riquelme "for everything the former Boca Juniors player has given" to the world of football.
The Spanish midfielder recalled the times when they shared a dressing room at Barcelona, specifically in the 2002/2003 season, when an established Riquelme played alongside a very young Iniesta in the squad.
"I can't forget how you took me in at a time that was undoubtedly delicate for you. But you always helped me. Both on the pitch and off it. You had an infinite generosity towards a young man who was playing at Camp Nou for the first time", said the player from Fuentealbilla, about a few days that "will last forever" in his memory.
"You won't see me physically in Buenos Aires, but I'll be there. Thanks for everything, Roman," said the Spanish midfielder, "I'll be there with you and your loved ones as a privileged spectator of this beautiful film of your life.
Argentine football legends, such as Lionel Messi, Pablo Aimar and Alfio 'Coco' Basile, and from the 'Boca Juniors world', such as Carlos Bianchi, Guillermo Barros Schelotto and Oscar Cordoba, among others, are on the list of those confirmed for the tribute that Riquelme will receive at La Bombonera.
