Inigo Martinez breaks into top 10 of consecutive league victories

Both Barcelona and Manchester City have made a flying start to the 2024-25 season. The ‘Cules’ have won the first 5 games of the season in Hansi Flick's debut and lead La Liga with a four-point lead over Atletico, Real Madrid and Villarreal. In the Premier League, Guardiola's side have won all four of their games and in this case lead by two points over Arsenal and Newcastle, who have only conceded one draw.
Before this weekend's direct clashes in both competitions (Villarreal-Barcelona in La Liga and Manchester City-Arsenal in the Premier League), the players of the Sky Blues monopolise the list of the men with the most consecutive victories in the major leagues. Only one player from Barcelona prevents the full Cityzen in this ranking that counts both the 2024-25 and the last matches of the 2023-24. Inigo Martinez, who has already shown signs of improvement in the last few games under Xavi and who has been in all of Barca's La Liga games this season.
The former Athletic Club player skipped the last ‘Cules’ stumbles with his previous coach and, to the victories this season against Girona (1-4), Real Valladolid (7-0), Rayo Vallecano (1-2), his previous team (2-1) and Valencia (1-2) he adds 8 more victories in the last La Liga matches he played in the 2023-24 for a total of 13 consecutive wins. Barca won with the defender against Mallorca (1-0), Atletico Madrid (0-3), UD Las Palmas (1-0), Valencia (4-2), Real Sociedad (2-0), Almeria (0-2), Rayo Vallecano (3-0) and Sevilla (1-2). In between, Xavi's side did accumulate a number of defeats, but Inigo Martinez was not part of them.
The centre-back's form in the Spanish league is such that since he arrived at Barcelona he has only lost one match in the domestic championship (1-2 against Real Madrid) and only conceded four more draws (0-0 with Athletic, 3-3 with Granada, 1-1 with Rayo and 2-2 with Mallorca). Looking at his record, the player from Ondarroa has now gone 20 consecutive matches in the top flight without defeat, a record that places him among the European top flight, but not as high as in the ranking of consecutive victories.
