Gian Piero Gasperini confirmed on Sunday, after the 3-0 Serie A win over Torino, that he will remain Atalanta coach next season.
Despite having a contract until June 2025, there were many rumours in Italy about Gasperini's departure from Atalanta after eight seasons at the helm crowned with the Europa League title that the 'Dea' won against Bayer Leverkusen on Wednesday, in what was the first European title in the club's history.
But the coach denied all rumours, including that of his departure to Napoli. "De Laurentis has been praising me for many years and that flatters me. Napoli will make their choice, I am linked to Atalanta and will remain so. I have never said the opposite about my stay in Bergamo. I just wanted to play the games. Atalanta's commitment was superior to everything else, I never gave room for other talks," he told 'Sky Sports' Italia.
"There is a very strong bond with the club and a mutual affection. We have been together for many years and there have never been any problems. I have always been linked to Atalanta. After eight years some wear and tear can appear, but it's normal," he added.
He also said he would prefer to play the UEFA Super Cup against Real Madrid, who will play the Champions League final against Borussia Dortmund">Borussia Dortmund at Wembley next Saturday.
"We have achieved a feat and we realise it. Bergamo is still celebrating this week. Next season will be difficult, but I don't think more than this one. More is impossible, we play every three days. If anything, we will add the UEFA Super Cup, which would be great against Real Madrid..." he said.
