Las Palmas announced on Tuesday the dismissal of Luis Carrion. The Catalan coach thus ends his brief spell with the Gran Canaria outfit, with whom he had signed a two-year contract last summer until 30th June 2026.
Last Saturday's 1-0 defeat to Real Club Celta Vigo at the Gran Canaria stadium, despite playing most of the second half with two more players than their opponents, ended Carrion's credibility in front of a disapproving crowd at the end of the game.
UD Las Palmas are the only team in the Spanish top flight without a win and are five points adrift of the relegation zone, having made their worst start in history with just three points from a possible 27, all of them at home.
The Gran Canarian side's poor run of form dates back to 10th February, when they celebrated their latest win in La Liga, 2-0 against Valencia, on matchday 24 of the previous season, with Xavi Garcia Pimienta -currently coach of Sevilla- in the islanders' dugout.
Since then, Las Palmas have gone 23 games without a win, in which they have only managed to keep a clean sheet once, in a goalless draw away to Cadiz on the second-to-last matchday of the previous season.
The island club opted for Luis Carrion last summer after the Catalan coach's good season with Real Oviedo, who qualified to play in the final of the play offs for promotion to La Liga, although in the end he did not achieve his goal with the Asturian side.
The short-lived spell of the Catalan coach has been marked by an irregular performance by the team, in which he has tried up to three different systems of play, and with only one convincing match, in which he earned a creditable draw in Gran Canaria against Real Madrid (1-1), the reigning La Liga and Champions League winners, on the third matchday of the domestic championship, on 29h August.
