Barcelona‘ s narrow 1-0 defeat to Real Sociedad (1-0) was marked by Robert Lewandowski’s disallowed goal when the match was 0-0. The Pole scored what was the momentary 0-1, but the technology annulled it for a millimetric offside that has generated a lot of controversy.
Clos Gomez, who is responsible for the VAR, spoke about the most talked about action of the day and made it clear how well the semi-automatic offside technology works.
"The technology at our disposal assessed the play and indicated that it was offside. These advances help football. A lot of times people criticise out of ignorance. This system works with 10 additional cameras. Up to 29 different points of a player are tracked. One of them is the foot. It came out that it was offside, the referee was informed and the decision was changed", he explained.
Clos Gomez wanted to play down the criticism generated by this action, with players like Raphinha making fun after the match of the decision taken by the technology. "In refereeing we are used to receiving criticism. Any participant in any sport is subject to criticism of their performance. As long as it is respectful, we accept criticism," he said.
