Leicester City manager Steve Cooper confirmed on Thursday that Abdul Fatawu has suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, which will keep him on the sidelines for the rest of the 2024/25 campaign.
The forward sustained the serious injury while on international duty with Angola during the qualifiers for the African Cup of Nations finals in Morocco. He was forced off the pitch in the 46th minute of the draw against Ghana earlier this week, thus making an early return to Leicester.
“An ACL injury rules him out for the rest of the season,” Cooper confirmed. “It is a serious injury and to happen at a young age is a blow for him and us. We now have to support him in every way to make his rehab and return as smooth as possible. Hopefully he comes back a stronger player and person.”
The Leicester boss highlighted the importance of being resilient during a difficult time like this, as he said: “Initially everyone will be upset when you lose a good player but at the same time we have to respond, role our sleeves up and respond.”
The 20-year-old is in his second year at the midlands club after making his move from Sporting Lisbon. He was significant in Leicester's promotion-winning campaign last season, registering 7 goals and 13 assists, but will unfortunately not be able to go past that tally for the current season - 2 assists in 13 appearances.
