Despite his contract expiring in 2026, Xabi Alonso is tipped to leave Bayer Leverkusen in the summer, as the Bundesliga champions are already looking for a potential successors to take over from the Spaniard. According to Sky Sport' journalist Florian Plettenberg, Xabi Alonso is a candidate to land the manager position at Real Madrid and Manchester City.
After a remarkable season last year, as Leverkusen put an end to Bayer Munich's 11-year reign in Germany, the side are preparing to see the head coach depart at the end of the season. Alonso's choice to stay at the club for the 2024/2025 season was a shock to most, as the former midfielder was heavily linked to take charge at Liverpool following Jurgen Klopp's farewell. Nevertheless, the Reds opted for Feyenoord's Arne Slot in the end, with their choice seemingly paying off so far.
Liverpool's Premier League rivals Man City are reportedly showing increasing interest in Xabi Alonso due to Guardiola's uncertain future at the Etihad. His contract with the English champions terminates at the end of the season, though Pep insisted he has not made a decision on whether to renew yet. City's legal case over the 115 charges from the Premier League will reportedly be crucial in the manager's verdict.
Nevertheless, Leverkusen don't want to be caught unprepared and are already looking at possible replacements for Xabi Alonso, as per Plettenberg. Stuttgard boss Sebastian Hoeness and Germany national team assistand coach Sandro Wagner are being considered for the position.
