Robert Lewandowski missed out on his third trophy as a Barcelona player in the final of the Spanish Super Cup. His trophy cabinet already has one and he was going for a second in a match that ended in a heavy defeat against Real Madrid. The Pole, aware of how painful it was for the fans, apologised to them in a post on his Instagram profile in which he added three photos of the match.
"Not an acceptable outcome tonight. Sincerest apologies to all the Barcelona fans," wrote the striker, who soon received thousands of comments and tens of thousands of likes. His post came late into the night, just after Carlo Ancelotti's side had finished their celebrations at the Al Nassr stadium, with the Catalans heading for the airport after their defeat and returning home this morning.
The former Bayern Munich man scored the only goal for his side in the 'Clasico', a sensational volley from the edge of the box that looked like it could be the start of a comeback that, in the end, did not happen. The 'Merengues', led by a Vinicius in top form, increased extended their lead to 4-1 and heard the final whistle with one more player on the pitch due to Ronald Araujo's red card.
For Lewandowski, the defeat was all the more disappointing considering he left a winning project like Bayern Munich to be a key player in Barcelona's post-Messi rebuilding process. In two seasons, he has scored 44 goals in 71 games.
